12 Healthy Dessert Ideas for Kids That Are Actually Delicious
Share
Dessert doesn’t always have to mean cookies, cake, ice cream, or a treat loaded with added sugar. (Although they sometimes can!) When looking for a healthier option, the simplest ingredients can be turned into something that feels extra special to kids. And you can still sneak in plenty of fruit, whole grains, protein, and other good-for-you ingredients.
Whether you’re looking for a healthier after-dinner treat, an afternoon snack, or something fun to make together in the kitchen, these 12 healthy dessert ideas for kids are easy, delicious, and kid-friendly.
And don’t worry, there’s still some chocolate involved!
1. Oatmeal Cookies + Banana Slices
Oatmeal cookies are a great place to start when you want something that still feels like a traditional dessert. Look for a recipe made with oats and less added sugar, or make simple banana oatmeal cookies using mashed ripe bananas and rolled oats.
Serve them alongside fresh banana slices for an easy dessert kids can eat with their hands. You can even add cinnamon, raisins, or a few mini chocolate chips to the cookies for a little extra flavor.
2. Yogurt Berry Bark
Yogurt bark is colorful, refreshing, and incredibly easy to make.
Spread Greek or regular yogurt in a thin layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Sprinkle fresh berries over the top and freeze until firm. Once frozen, break it into pieces and serve!
Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries all work well. You can also add a light sprinkle of granola for some crunch.
Kid tip: Let the kids add their own toppings before the bark goes into the freezer.
3. Mango Fruit Popsicles
Skip the store-bought freezer pops and make your own with real fruit!
Blend ripe mango with a splash of water, coconut water, or orange juice until smooth. Pour the mixture into popsicle molds, freeze, and you have a naturally sweet frozen treat.
You can also mix mango with strawberries, pineapple, peaches, or banana to create different flavor combinations.
4. Apple Slices With Peanut Butter + Cinnamon
Sometimes the easiest desserts are the best.
Slice up a crisp apple, spread or dip the slices in peanut butter, and finish them with a sprinkle of cinnamon. You get sweetness from the apple, creaminess from the peanut butter, and plenty of flavor from the cinnamon.
For an extra-special dessert version, add a few mini chocolate chips or a tiny drizzle of melted dark chocolate.
5. Dark Chocolate Dipped Strawberries
Chocolate-covered strawberries feel decadent, but they’re also one of the easiest ways to turn fresh fruit into dessert.
Wash and thoroughly dry fresh strawberries. Dip them halfway into melted dark chocolate, place them on parchment paper, and allow the chocolate to set.
Kids get a little bit of chocolate with every bite while the strawberry remains the star of the show.
6. Frozen Yogurt Banana Pops
These are especially fun for kids because they get to decorate their own!
Cut bananas in half, slide them onto popsicle sticks, and dip or coat them in yogurt. Sprinkle with granola and a few mini chocolate chips, then place them in the freezer until firm.
The frozen banana becomes creamy and sweet, while the yogurt and toppings make it feel like a real frozen dessert.
Try rolling them in crushed nuts, coconut, cereal, or freeze-dried fruit for even more variations.
7. Berry + Granola Parfaits
Dessert served in layers automatically seems more exciting!
Add alternating layers of yogurt, fresh berries, and granola to a small glass or cup. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are all delicious options.
You can let kids build their own parfaits, too. Set out several fruits, yogurt, and toppings and let everyone create their perfect combination.
For a sweeter treat, drizzle a small amount of honey or maple syrup over the top.
8. Fresh Fruit Salad
It doesn't get much simpler (or more colorful) than a big bowl of fresh fruit.
The trick to making fruit salad feel like dessert is using lots of different colors, flavors, and textures. Try combining strawberries, blueberries, grapes, pineapple, mango, kiwi, mandarin oranges, and melon.
You can serve it as-is or add a dollop of yogurt or whipped cream on top.
Another fun option is letting kids make fruit kabobs by adding pieces of fruit to child-safe skewers.
9. Watermelon Pops
Watermelon pops may be the easiest healthy dessert on this entire list. Cut watermelon into triangular slices and carefully insert a popsicle stick through the rind. That's it!
Kids get the fun of eating something on a stick without you having to do much prep at all. Chill the watermelon beforehand for an especially refreshing summer treat.
10. Homemade Fruit Sorbet
Homemade sorbet is another way to transform fruit into a dessert that feels like ice cream.
Frozen mango, strawberries, raspberries, peaches, pineapple, or a combination of fruits can be blended until smooth and creamy. (Depending on the fruit, you may need to add a small splash of liquid to help everything blend.)
Serve it immediately for a soft-serve consistency, or place it in the freezer to firm up before scooping.
Experiment with different combinations to find your family's favorite!
11. Oatmeal Blueberry Muffins
Who says muffins can't be dessert?
Oatmeal blueberry muffins have just enough sweetness to feel like a treat while incorporating oats and juicy blueberries. They’re also a great option when you want a dessert that can double as breakfast or an afternoon snack the next day.
Make a batch ahead of time and freeze the extras. Then you can pull out just what you need whenever someone asks for a treat.
Mini muffins are especially fun for younger kids! (During fall, be sure to also try this Pumpkin Squash Muffin Recipe!)
12. Peanut Butter Energy Bites
No-bake peanut butter energy bites are easy to make, easy to customize, and perfect for little hands.
A basic version can be made with ingredients such as rolled oats, peanut butter, honey or maple syrup, and a small amount of mini chocolate chips. Mix everything together, chill the mixture, and roll it into bite-sized balls.
You can customize them with ground flaxseed, chia seeds, shredded coconut, raisins, or other favorite mix-ins.
They're sweet enough to satisfy that dessert craving without needing to turn on the oven.
Healthy Desserts Don't Have to Be Boring
Offering kids healthier desserts doesn't mean eliminating every cookie, bowl of ice cream, or piece of chocolate. It's about having more options.
Fruit, yogurt, oats, nut or seed butters, and other simple ingredients can make some pretty amazing treats. And many of these ideas are easy enough that kids can help prepare them.
Pick a couple to try with your kids and see which ones become family favorites!
