Easy Homemade Play Dough Recipe for Kids

Sometimes, you really do just have to get a little messy!

While Bin Busy Kids Busy Bins are designed to help save parental sanity with engaging, mess-free play most of the time, I also think there are some classic childhood activities every kid should get to experience. And homemade play dough is definitely one of them!

Squishing it, rolling it, cutting it, building with it; there's just something about a fresh batch of soft play dough that kids LOVE. Better yet, you don't need a complicated recipe or a long list of ingredients to make it.

This easy homemade play dough recipe uses just four basic pantry ingredients (plus optional food coloring), requires no cooking, and comes together in just a few minutes.

It's perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and young kids and makes a fun sensory activity for rainy days, homeschool lessons, classroom centers, playdates, or anytime you need an easy activity at home.

Why Make Homemade Play Dough?

Sure, you can buy containers of play dough at the store, but making it yourself is part of the fun!  Kids can help measure and mix the ingredients and then watch as a few everyday kitchen staples transform into something they can play with.

Play dough is also a great open-ended activity. There aren't really any rules or a "right" way to play. Kids can roll it, squish it, flatten it, cut out shapes, make pretend food, practice letters and numbers, or create whatever their imaginations come up with.

Easy Homemade Play Dough Ingredients

You only need a handful of ingredients:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • Food coloring, optional

That's it!

No cream of tartar. No boiling water. No standing over the stove cooking a batch. Just mix, knead, and PLAY!

How To Make Homemade Play Dough

1. Mix The Flour And Salt

Add 1 cup of flour and 1/2 cup of salt to a bowl and stir until they're well combined.

2. Add The Water And Oil

Pour in 1/2 cup of warm water and 1 tablespoon of oil. Stir everything together until a dough begins to form.

3. Knead Until Soft

Use your hands to knead the dough until it becomes soft and smooth.

If the dough feels a little sticky, sprinkle in a small amount of additional flour and continue kneading. If it seems too dry or crumbly, add just a tiny bit more water.

A little can go a long way, so make adjustments gradually!

4. Add Color & PLAY!

You can leave your play dough its natural color or add food coloring to make things more exciting.

For multiple colors, divide the finished dough into smaller portions before adding the food coloring. Knead each portion until the color is evenly distributed.

Tip: Food coloring can temporarily stain hands and surfaces, so you may want to wear gloves while kneading in the color or place the dough inside a zip-top bag and knead it through the bag.

Then it's time to PLAY!

How To Store Homemade Play Dough

When playtime is over, don't toss your dough!  Store homemade play dough in an airtight container or sealed zip-top bag to help prevent it from drying out. Keeping as much air out as possible will help it stay soft for future play sessions.
